Matt Cali loves to laugh with you. He is interested in the small details of your life. And when that light of memory turns on for you, Matt snaps the picture. Whether with his camera in hand or in a pre-shoot interview he travels along with you to the tender moments that have made up your life. It is these simple moments that represent something bigger for Matt.
He started his photographic career near the cold serene shores of The Puget Sound.
At age 17, his father surprised him with his first camera, a Pentax k1000. He held back the excitement from Dad that night, but it was exactly the perfect gift to soften teenage rebellious angst. That first camera went with him the following year to Central Washington University for a Fine Art Major with a Focus in Photography.
When pressed on the knowledge he acquired in college, he said, "I can't believe how little I knew technically about photography." He did learn that he loved shooting people. Faces fascinated him, "the interaction between me and them and the camera".
This became his focal point - shooting people. An opportunity to step back, camera in hand seeing a social situation through a different perspective inspired his career. The philosophy was simple, "look at life, (through the camera lens) which I can create or observe".
He continued his study at the Photographic Center Northwest, essentially achieving a masters in photography. While studying he worked in a photo lab fine-tuning interpersonal and development techniques. He became the do-it-all-man while there. He was staff photographer at Seattle Models Guild, when not fixing broken cameras, developing custom prints or handling delicate clients. He learned quickly that a career in photography is also a career in anthropology. (-the study of humankind)
Before leaving the muted light of Seattle for over exposed Los Angeles he had 5 solo exhibitions of his work, shot special events, weddings, headshots, fine art and portraits.
In Los Angeles now for 3 years he works in the industry-photographing actors, models and portraits, when not running to capture the cake cutting ceremony or the first dance as husband and wife at a local wedding ceremony.
If you need a photographer who listens to you like an old friend, who all the while captures your unique beauty, call Matt Cali Photography and enjoy yourself.
